Degust® – Components

Degust Design

Degust enables you to carry out meaningful tests within your network and at the edge of the networks, which can be mobile networks, any flavour of DSLm Cable Network or FTTx.
In order to achieve the highest possible flexibility and to limit the integration with providers to a minimum, we have decided on the following design.

Installed in the Cloud

Degust runs in the cloud and can be operated with any modern browser. All systems (servers, databases and Cloud Active Probes) are redundant and distributed as failover in 3 data centers to ensure availability and to bring the data as close as possible to the user.

This is how Degust is installed in the Cloud.

In addition, we have developed special systems for the various purposes and functions that we present here.

Acctopus Hardware

The following hardware is designed by acctopus and will be made available to the customers.
Installation is as simple as installing a SoHo WiFi router and the systems are connected to the Degust Cloud Service.

Degust Global Client M

Global clients are installed at the location, where the test should be carried out. This may be the operator’s lab, a national data center or an international data center for roaming tests. Like any mobile client, the Global Client requires SIM cards during the test. These SIM cards are provided by the Degust SIM distribution, stored in the Degust SIM server.

Degust SIM Server

Degust comes with a SIM management service and SIM distribution functionality, which can be used and configured using the Degust Cockpit in-browser application. The required hardware is designed and produced by Acctopus.

For E2E tests, the SIM server is used by the Global Client to get the subscriber identity during the test of the mobile network. SIM cards and UEs are assigned to a test and the SIM card will be virtually inserted into the UE, anywhere on the planet.
For Simulation tests, it gets connected by the Active Probe for EAP SIM or EAP AKA authentication requests (VoLTE or VoWiFi). This eliminates the requirement of a device for these tests and allows to test the authentication platforms (e.g. an AAA) authenticating a real SIM card against a real HSS. Simulating these authentication request is much faster then allocating and configuring a real device for this – especially, if you only want to test the involved protocols.

The Desktop SIM Server are coming in two variants (8 or 16 SIM) and are normally used on the desktop of the test personnel. This ensures fast exchange of SIM during ad hoc testing of upcoming situations in the test bed or in the live environment.

For large scale regression tests, SIM are normally stored in a secure area in a computer rack. This is the application for the 64 SIM, 1HE rack server.

All types of SIM server are configured using the Degust Cockpit. As soon as a SIM is inserted and configured in the system (e.g. SIM password, MSISDN if required …), the SIM can easily be moved from one SIM server to another, without the requirement to reconfigure the SIM or the underlying tests. This enables the test personnel to configure new tests on their desktops and move them to the rack, as soon the test are well configured. It also allows to send the SIMs for new products to the OEM who brings them back into the test bed for the type acceptance procedures… together with the test, he did during the development. This again simplifies the testing projects.

Degust Active Porbe

The Active Probes are the simulation entities. On these systems, Degust simulates all sorts of clients to the operator’s core interfaces, to O&M and login facilities. If required, it also provisions the operator’s systems for the tests and connects to 3rd party systems for troubleshooting and – wherever it is required to secure – the operator’s previous investments in other tools.

This kind of simulation is safe. Wherever possible, we imitate what the system operators could do. The user or system account that Degust would use on a remote third-party system is configured on that system, so Degust can only do things that the administrator of that system grants.
